Smoking Fast

Smoking Fast

I'm a pretty fast typer. I'm not sure about my 'words per minute' range but there's not many that can keep up with me. I do have a major problem with typing numbers though. When I was taking my typing class back in high school,(probably the only class that ever paid off in high school) we started to learn the numbers when my grandfather died. When I got back to school I never recovered from missing those number lessons. So even today I slow down reaching for those numbers....it's usually no more than a second later that I start to think about my grandfather Ernest Demby....

  • A great looking typewriter and a nice story. I remember wathing a show on Discovery Channel Europe where they were talking about why it was called 'lower case' letters and 'upper case' letters. Back then (before typewriters), the guy who was selecting letters for the press / newspaper pages would have a table with many small cases and the 'capitol' / 'upper case' letters would be in the cases at the top, hence the 'upper cases'. To me, stories like that make watching TV fun and educational :)

  • This makes me think of a cover for a novel (maybe an Ernest Hemingway..)..love the grainy fell to it and the framing, it's cool and gives more relief !!On my ibook (in France) it's 'azerty' not 'querty' written ;-)

  • Very nice frame and story. It's really remarkable how we associate situations, some of them last a lifetime.

  • Funny how something seemingly random can bring us right back to a certain time and place. I love the vintage feel of this image...well done, Ash :)

  • Typewriters remind me of my grandfather as well. Still have his old machine and repairing tools lying around the house somewhere.

    Great picture. Love the grain.

  • Very nostalgic. I remember typing so fast on one like this that the strikers or whatever you call them would get stuck together and jam up the typewriter. Ah, those were the days...lol
